Cruzing down union street 28 years later! |

It was March 13, 1982 when John Parker took this picture of then Southern 5126 moving down the middle of Union Street in Aiken SC. http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=325945 Now 28 years later 5126 is back on p22 in NS paint and I had planned from the first day I saw this one in my home town to try and dupe the shot by John Parker. From film to digital some things still haven't changed. Well here it is. Of course I can't get everything exactly right because it's hard for me to find our exactly where Mr. Parker was standing 28 years ago. I'm zoomed in much closer than Mr. Parker was. Furthermore the engine is running longhood forward this time and is pulling covered hoppers instead of southern boxcars. The tree that John was standing behind is long gone, and the house has been re-painted to a greenish color whereas it was white back in Parker's photo. Many of the background trees remain but also take notice that my shot is taken in the summer and his is taken in late winter so all the hardwood trees have no leaves in his photo. Finding and planning this shot took some time because the neighborhood has changed in a few ways but the general layout has remained the same and that played in my favor. But I can say I did it. Not many railfans get this opportunity after 20 years have passed and I sure was glad to see 5126 on my local this summer. Maybe 28 years from now another railfan will get a chance to do this again. |

Since they shifted part of the tracks over about 10 feet in Graniteville, this created a curve before the small trussell. Makes for an interesting shot but I feel I can do better next time I get the chance to take this shot. I never really noticed this curve til yesterday but I think next time I just need my zoom ranged in fully. One thing I can say for widecabs they do make good curve shots. |

This was uploaded at a large resolution on purpose. Ok this is very abnormal for NS to idle a train at this crossing so I kind of got a rare shot here. Now notice I have the whole train in this shot it was only 44 cars long. Now if you view this shot in fullview look down the tracks behind the train and notice you can almost clearly make out the storm branch road crossing which is more than a mile away, and a truck clearing it. You see the railroad tracks are very flat and go down a straight path for about a mile so you can actually see pretty far and whenever I'm railfanning this area I always take advantage of this because I can tell if there's a nothbound train comming from the lights shinning miles away. Now I know most people would call the fujifilm finepix S5200 a mediocre $275 point and shoot camera but when it performs like this and you can almost clearly make out distant objects then that's more than just a point and shoot. But if this was a $1,000 Nikon I probably would be able to tell what kind of truck that is in the background. |

This kinds blowed because this train had two former conrail units in it and it had to be the common dash-9 that was on point. I made a last ditch effort to get the conrail engines but failed. I do have a bad photo of them but I haven't decided if I want to load it. |
